What I Thought Was a Dealbreaker Was Actually Something Sweet

After connecting with a guy on a dating app through great conversations and shared humor, I was excited for our first in-person meeting. He looked just like his photos and was polite and engaging, but I was immediately taken aback by how overpowering his scent was. Whether it was cologne or body spray, it was so strong it became distracting throughout our otherwise enjoyable date.

By the end of the evening, I gently asked about his cologne. He laughed sheepishly and explained that he always worried about not smelling fresh enough, so he tended to overapply—hoping to make a good impression.

Suddenly, what I had perceived as a dealbreaker revealed itself as insecurity and a desire to be liked. My initial judgment softened, and I realized that what seemed like a flaw was actually a sign of his effort and nervousness. We parted on good terms, and though romance wasn’t certain, I walked away with a valuable lesson: sometimes what we see as a red flag is just someone trying their best—and that deserves a second thought.
