My Boyfriend Shamed Me for Years, but the Gender Reveal Party Was the Breaking Point, and He Received His Just Desserts.
I believed that having a baby would finally alter the way he treated me. I organized a gender reveal party, hoping it would strengthen our bond. However, when the day arrived, an uninvited guest transformed it into something entirely different—and compelled me to make the most difficult decision of my life.
They say that when someone feels unhappy, they will seek a way out. But when love is at stake, leaving is not so straightforward.
Love leads people to overlook many things, yearning for a day when circumstances might shift.
I understood this not from someone else's experience, but from my own.
I loved my boyfriend Bob — wholeheartedly and completely. So much so that I often disregarded all his shortcomings.
We had been a couple for over five years, and I was certain of my love for him. I envisioned us spending our lives together. Yet, Bob continually delayed any conversation about marriage.
He always had an excuse, consistently claiming it wasn't the right moment. But then I took a pregnancy test — and saw two lines. I thought it was finally the perfect time. There could be no better occasion.
I was ecstatic. We were going to have a baby!
I placed the test inside a lovely box, prepared dinner, and awaited Bob's return.
An hour later, he entered the kitchen, looking displeased.
“What’s all this for?”
“Sit down,” I said softly. Suddenly, I detected an unusual scent on him. “Why do you smell like women’s perfume?”
“What are you talking about? You probably sprayed it on yourself and now you’re blaming me. You always want to start a fight.”
I knew he was lying. The scent was on him. And it wasn't the first occasion he returned home smelling of perfume or with lipstick marks on his collar.
Still, I held onto the hope that the news of the baby would change everything.
I picked up the box and handed it to him.
“This is a surprise for you.”
“Hope it’s something for fishing,” Bob replied cheerfully. But when he opened the box, his expression soured. “What is this?”
“It’s a pregnancy test! We’re having a baby!”
Bob immediately let the test drop from his hand.
“Ugh! You peed on that thing!”
“What does that matter? We’re having a baby!” I insisted. “Aren't you happy?”
“Yeah, sure, happy. I was just wondering why you’ve been looking so fat lately.”
It wasn't the reaction I had envisioned, not the excitement I had anticipated. But at least he hadn’t walked out.
That had to count for something… right?
Regrettably, all my hopes that Bob would stop his infidelities were futile.
He continued to come home late, perpetually smelling of women’s perfume.
But people claimed that a woman becomes a mother the moment she conceives, while a man only becomes a father once he holds the baby. So I kept believing things would shift.
One day, I heard the doorbell ring. It was Michael, Bob’s brother. He carried large grocery bags.
“Hey,” Michael greeted me warmly as he entered. “I heard the fantastic news and wanted to come over.”
He walked to the kitchen, placing the bags on the counter.
“I read that pregnant women need plenty of vitamins, so I brought you healthy food.”
“Thank you, but you really didn’t have to. How did you even find out? Bob and I agreed not to tell anyone yet.”
“Oh, he told me. He’s been boasting about it. Keeps saying he’s going to inherit Grandma’s entire fortune now.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Well, Grandma stated in her will that everything goes to the first grandchild,” Michael clarified. “That would be your baby.”
“I see…”
“How are you doing? Is Bob treating you well? Do you need assistance?”
“Bob has never harmed me,” I replied. For some reason, Michael regarded me with pity. “But I do have my first ultrasound today, and I’m anxious about going alone. Bob—”
“I’ll accompany you.”
“Really? I can’t ask that of you. You must be busy.”
“For you, I always have time,” Michael assured me with a warm smile.
Later, we went to the appointment together. It was enchanting. I saw my baby for the first time, heard that tiny heartbeat, and it was so emotional that I began to cry.
But I wasn’t the only one wiping tears — I noticed Michael quickly brushing his eyes with his sleeve.
It warmed my heart that he had come with me. Michael had always been there, unlike Bob.
Michael was a good person, and I appreciated that he treated me like family, even though Bob and I weren’t married.
After the appointment, Michael treated me to dinner and then drove me home.
When I showed Bob the ultrasound pictures, he barely looked at them.
“Yeah, cool. But you can’t even see anything in those pictures.”
The months went by, and my belly expanded. Michael was incredibly supportive throughout the pregnancy.
He gifted me numerous things for the baby and consistently checked on my well-being.
Bob, on the other hand, still seemed oblivious to the fact that he was going to be a father.
The only comment he ever made about my pregnancy was:
“You really need to monitor how much you’re eating. You’ve gained a lot of weight.”
When it was time to discover the baby’s gender, I requested the doctor not to disclose it.
I wanted to have a special celebration, to invite family and friends, and find out the baby’s gender surrounded by loved ones. However, when I shared the idea with Bob, I didn’t receive the reaction I had hoped for.
That evening, Michael came over to visit.
Bob didn’t even attempt to hide his annoyance.
“Are you kidding me? A gender reveal party? Who the hell needs that?!” Bob yelled.
“I do. I want to celebrate,” I responded calmly.
“Celebrate? With what money?! You sit at home all day, don’t work, and now you want to squander my money on some nonsense?!”
“You’re the one who wanted me to quit my job, remember?” I stated quietly.
“Because you’re a woman. Women aren’t capable of working properly anyway!” Bob continued to yell.
Tears began to fill my eyes. I placed my hand protectively over my belly.
“Bob, can I speak with you for a moment?” Michael asked firmly.
“Stay out of this! It’s none of your business!” Bob snapped.
“Just for a minute,” Michael repeated, still calm.
They went into the kitchen.
I couldn’t help myself — I leaned closer to eavesdrop.
“She’s completely lost her mind! Doing whatever the hell she wants!” Bob shouted.
“She’s carrying your child. You should be grateful,” Michael replied.
“I’m not spending money on that crap!”
“I’ll pay for everything. But you’d better act like a decent human being,” Michael responded.
“I don’t need your damn charity!” Bob retorted.
“I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing it for her.”
“Oh, I see. You want her for yourself! I can tell by the way you look at her. You’re trying to steal my woman!” my husband accused.
“She’ll leave you on her own if you don’t change your behavior,” Michael said as he exited the kitchen.
I hurried back to the living room before they returned.
Then Michael walked in, followed by Bob.
“Fine. You can have your stupid gender party,” Bob grumbled.
“Good night,” Michael said and headed to the front door.
I followed him and caught up just as he stepped outside.
“I overheard your conversation. Thank you… for everything.”
“You know he’s not worth it. You know he’s cheating on you, and yet you stay. I don’t understand,” Michael said gently.
“Because I love him,” I replied.
“Do you? Or are you just afraid to leave?”
“I have nowhere to go,” I confessed.
“Yes, you do. You know exactly why I’m doing all of this. You have somewhere to go, Alison. Even if you never approached me, I would still do everything I could to assist you.”
Then, without allowing me a chance to respond, Michael turned and walked to his car.
In the days leading up to the gender reveal party, I kept reflecting on Michael’s words—that Bob didn’t deserve me.
But I still hoped he would change. I still hoped the baby would transform him. Yet, with each passing day, that hope felt increasingly fragile.
The day of the gender reveal arrived. Michael offered to host the party in his backyard since Bob refused to let me arrange anything at our home.
My family attended, Bob’s family came, and a few of our friends joined as well. Michael tried to smile at me, but I sensed he was distant. Something weighed heavily on his heart.
When it was time to reveal the baby’s gender, Bob and I stepped into the center, ready to cut the cake.
But just as we reached for the knife, a woman I had never seen before pushed me aside and cut the cake with Bob — as if I were invisible.
I saw the filling. Pink. We were having a girl.
My heart swelled with joy, but confusion quickly followed.
Who was that woman? And why did Bob look so unfazed?
“What is happening?!” I shouted.
“This is our surrogate, right, baby?” the woman cooed, turning to Bob.
“Yes, Stacey, that’s her,” Bob replied.
“What the hell?! What surrogate?! This is my baby!” I screamed.
“Stop it, Alison,” Bob said coldly. “You didn’t really think I was going to raise this baby with you, did you?”
“What are you talking about?!”
“Look at yourself. You’ve let yourself go. You’ve gained weight. You’re not attractive anymore. Not like Stacey. Stacey is beautiful. And she won’t actually give birth. We’re just taking the baby.”
“You can’t just take my child!” I cried as tears streamed down my cheeks.
“Oh, I can. You have no job, no home. Who’s going to let you raise a child when you can’t even care for yourself? You’re just our surrogate. I’ll get the baby, and then the inheritance from Grandma.”
I turned just in time to see Bob’s grandmother scowl in outrage.
As my world crumbled, Michael stepped in behind me. I looked at him — and then he knelt down.
“Alison. Will you marry me? I’m ready to raise this baby as my own.”
Suddenly, everything flooded back to me — every moment Michael was there when Bob wasn’t. All those times he assisted me, all the small acts of kindness, the support, the quiet strength.
I realized I had chosen the wrong brother all along.
