A 20-year-old man from Aberdeen, Washington, is being called a hero after risking his life to save his 8-year-old niece from a burning home—suffering severe burns in the process.

The Night the Fire Broke Out

The blaze erupted in the early morning hours at a family home shared by Derrick Byrd, his sister Kayla, and her three children.

Neighbors heard screams and saw flames tearing through the two-story house.

Inside, Kayla got her two sons to a window and shouted for them to jump.

Derrick stood below, ready to catch them.

The Moment That Changed Everything

“I caught Junior and Royce when they jumped,” Derrick told KOMO-TV.

“But Mercedes… she was too scared. She saw her mom fall from the roof, and she just froze.”

Without hesitating, Derrick ran back into the burning house.

“I could feel it burning me,” he said. “But I didn’t care. I just kept going.”

The Rescue That Left Him Burned

Inside, he found Mercedes trapped in a corner, her face streaked with soot and tears.

He wrapped his shirt around her face, scooped her up, and carried her out—his skin already blistering.
