The Hidden Illness That Claimed the Life of a Hollywood Icon

Bill Bixby, the beloved American actor and director best known for playing Dr. David Banner on The Incredible Hulk, lived a life marked by professional success and profound personal tragedy before a private illness ended his life at age 59.
Born in 1934, Bixby’s big break came in 1963 with My Favorite Martian. He became a household name, earning Emmy nominations for The Courtship of Eddie’s Father and later garnering a cult following for The Incredible Hulk. His easygoing charm made him instantly likable to audiences and colleagues alike.
Behind the scenes, Bixby endured immense personal loss. His six-year-old son, Christopher, died from a rare infection in 1981. A year later, his ex-wife, Brenda Benet, died by suicide. Despite these hardships, Bixby continued working, transitioning into directing popular 1980s TV shows.
