The Birthday Scotch and the Two-Drop Secret
An elderly woman walked up to the bar on a cruise liner and requested a Scotch with exactly two drops of water.
As the bartender handed her the glass, she remarked, “I’m on this voyage to celebrate turning 80, and today is the big day.”
The bartender replied, “Well, since it’s your birthday, this round is on the house.”
Once the lady finished her glass, a woman sitting to her right said, “I’d like to buy you a drink as well.”
The lady answered, “Thank you, that’s very kind of you. Alright, bartender, I’ll take another Scotch with two drops of water.”
“You got it,” the bartender said.
When she was done with that drink, a gentleman to her left spoke up, “I want to buy you a round, too.”
The lady said, “I appreciate that very much, dear. Bartender, please give me another Scotch with two drops of water.”
“Coming right up,” answered the bartender.
As he served her the drink this time, he admitted, “Ma’am, I’m dying to know. Why do you insist on the Scotch having only two drops of water?”
The old woman gave a little laugh and replied,
“Young man, when you get to be my age, you’ve learned exactly how to handle your liquor. Keeping your water in, however, is a completely different story.”
