U.S. Soldier Stands in the Rain to Honor Passing Funeral — A Moment of True Respect

A Soldier’s Quiet Gesture Captures Hearts

On July 6, 2017, in Vine Grove, Kentucky, Erin Hester witnessed something profoundly moving. A lone U.S. soldier had stepped out of his vehicle and stood at attention in the pouring rain as a funeral procession passed. He wasn’t connected to the deceased, nor was he part of the ceremony—but he chose to pay his respects.

Hester photographed the scene and shared it online, saying, “This gentleman went above and beyond. Seeing the respect he showed to a family he didn’t even know truly warmed my heart.”

The image quickly spread across social media. The soldier was later identified as Colonel Jack L. Usrey of the Tennessee Army National Guard. When asked about the gesture, he remained humble: “My first thought was how difficult this moment must be for the family in such bad weather, and I hoped my small action could show them someone cares.”

Colonel Usrey credited his parents for instilling respect in him from a young age. Though simple, his quiet act in the rain became a powerful reminder of the impact of dignity, honor, and thoughtful gestures.
