Rhode Island Ice Rink Tragedy Shocks Community After Fatal Family Shooting

What was meant to be a celebration of dedication, sportsmanship, and senior athletes abruptly turned into a moment of terror at a Rhode Island ice rink. On the afternoon of February 16, families filled the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, anticipating a spirited high school hockey game. Instead, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the event, sending athletes, parents, and spectators fleeing for safety. Authorities later confirmed that two people were killed and three others were wounded in what investigators believe was a targeted incident involving members of the same family.
Police identified the suspected shooter as Robert Dorgan, who was also known by the name Roberta Esposito. According to law enforcement and media accounts, he is believed to have fired shots at his wife and their three children before turning the weapon on himself, resulting in fatal injuries. A woman who identified herself as his daughter told local outlet WCVB that her father was responsible and shared that he had long struggled with mental health challenges. Officials stressed that no players were physically harmed on the ice, though many witnessed the frightening sequence of events. Coventry hockey player Olin Lawrence recalled initially mistaking the noise for balloons popping, only to realize moments later that it was gunfire, prompting him and his teammates to rush into a locker room and barricade themselves until it was safe.
Local and state officials voiced deep sorrow following the tragedy. Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien said that what should have been a joyful Senior Night celebration was instead overshadowed by “fear and violence,” extending prayers and condolences to the families affected. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee also released a statement, calling the incident devastating for the entire state. School administrators later confirmed that all students, parents, and staff in attendance were safely accounted for, though many were understandably shaken by the experience.
Federal authorities, including agents from the FBI’s Boston Division, have joined Pawtucket police and state officials in the investigation. Law enforcement agencies said they are coordinating closely to piece together the full circumstances and will share updates as verified information becomes available. As the Pawtucket community begins to process the loss, leaders are emphasizing compassion, unity, and support for those impacted. Tragedies of this nature leave deep emotional scars, and counseling services and community resources are being offered to help students and families navigate the difficult days ahead.
