The American drama series was helmed by Joshua John Miller, who developed the acclaimed TV program alongside his writing partner M.A. Fortin.

It is adapted from the Spanish-language telenovela La Reina del Sur, which itself is based on a novel authored by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.

Brazilian actress Alice Braga, recognized for her parts in Dark Matter and I Am Legend, takes the leading role in the series, starring opposite Peter Gadiot and Veronica Falcón.

The show’s summary states: “Teresa escapes Mexico after her drug-trafficking partner is killed. Relocating to Dallas, she aspires to become the nation’s top drug trafficker and to exact vengeance for her lover’s death.”

The novel ‘La Reina del Sur,’ which inspired the series, draws from the story of a real-life female drug kingpin, Marllory Chacón, whose moniker, bestowed by the Guatemalan media, provided the title for the hit show.

She turned herself in to U.S. authorities in 2014.

The debut season launched in 2016, but even now new viewers are finding the show, and have been driven to devour all five seasons consecutively.

Braga discussed with Forbes the significance of the project: “Having Latinos on screen is vital, because… when they’re watching the series, they can see their own reflections in it.”

She added: “The Latino community is vast, but if we lack Latinos in the director’s chair, if we lack Latinos in the writer’s room, in the executive suites making decisions, you also miss certain narratives told from that authentic perspective.”

Although Queen of the South enjoys immense popularity with its fanbase, the series concluded with its fifth season.

The end came as a result of the USA Network’s strategic shift away from producing original content.
