My Mom Abandoned Me for Her Boyfriend and Reached Out Years Later – A Tale of Betrayal and True Family

Diane’s mother left her with relatives to chase romance across Europe, leaving young Diane longing for her return. Years later, a reunion revealed painful truths about her mother’s motives.
“Mom, please take me with you,” 8-year-old Diane pleaded as her mother, Erika, packed her bags.
“I’m sorry, sweetie. This is a work trip. You can’t come this time. But when I’m back, we’ll visit Disneyland together,” Erika promised.
“Where will I stay?” Diane asked, confused.
“With your aunt Karina and uncle Roger. Won’t that be fun? My sister adores you,” Erika replied. She drove Diane to Karina’s home, said her goodbyes, and left.
“You’ll have such a blast here, you might not want to leave when your mom returns,” Uncle Roger teased. Diane enjoyed her time, but weeks stretched into months with only rare calls from her mother.
Erika promised a swift return with gifts, but it never happened. Years passed, and Diane adapted to life with her aunt and uncle, yet she held onto hope for her mother’s return—until a devastating call.
“I’m staying in Italy, Diane. I’ve met an amazing man, and we’re getting married. It’s beautiful here,” Erika explained over the phone.
“Can I come live with you in Milan?” Diane asked hopefully.
“Not right now. You need to finish school. Things here are different. Maybe you can join me for college—how’s that?” Erika suggested. Diane, disappointed, agreed.
As more years passed, Diane realized her mother had no intention of bringing her to Italy. She blocked Erika’s calls and told Aunt Karina, “I’m done with her forever.”
Karina and Roger had become her true parents, and nothing would change that. But in her senior year of high school, Karina came to her with the phone. “It’s your mom, sweetheart. She really wants to talk. Please take it,” she urged.
Reluctantly, Diane answered. “Hello?”
“Darling!” Erika exclaimed. “It’s been ages. Come to Milan! Your stepfather wants to meet you, and we’ll check out colleges. It’ll be thrilling—and the Italian boys are so charming!”
Karina and Roger encouraged the trip. “You might reconnect with her, Diane. Plus, you’ll see Europe,” Karina said.
Uncertain but curious, Diane packed and flew to Milan. Her mother was now a stranger, but the chance to see a new city was hard to pass up.
At the airport, Erika’s face soured. “What are you wearing?” she asked sharply.
“Hi, Mom. I just got off a plane—I dressed for comfort,” Diane replied, puzzled.
“That won’t do. You can’t meet my husband like that. I’ll find you something at home,” Erika said dismissively.
In the car, Erika rambled about her life, barely asking about Diane except to criticize. “You’re heavier than I thought, but we’ll fix that with a diet,” she remarked, almost to herself.
At dinner, Diane was forced into a fancy dress to meet her stepfather, a wealthy businessman who barely acknowledged her beyond a greeting and a request for the salt. Erika played the doting mother in his presence, a stark contrast to her coldness otherwise.
“Sweetie, you’ll stay here now. This city’s so much better than back home,” Erika announced after an awkward hour.
“What? I thought this was just a visit to explore colleges,” Diane said, stunned.
“No, you’re staying. Your stepfather always wanted kids, and since I’m too old, you’ll fill that role,” Erika said casually, revealing her true motive.
Diane had enough. “Mom, can I have some money for a taxi? I want to check out downtown,” she asked. Erika, wary of looking bad in front of her husband, handed over the cash.
Instead of sightseeing, Diane took a cab to the airport, swapped her ticket for the earliest flight, and returned to Karina and Roger’s home after hours of travel.
“What are you doing back, sweetheart?” Karina asked, shocked.
“I couldn’t stay. You and Uncle Roger are my real parents. She just wanted to parade me for her husband since she can’t have more kids,” Diane explained.
“Oh, honey, you’ll always have a home here,” Roger said, pulling her into a hug. Diane let go of Erika for good, knowing she already had a loving family.
