Jimmy the Bear: The Gentle Giant Who Found a Forever Home

At the Orphaned Wildlife Center in Middletown, New York, Marty and Debbie Kowalczik have dedicated their lives to saving injured and orphaned wild animals. On their 100-acre sanctuary, they provide a safe, permanent home for many creatures — including bears.
One of their most special residents is Jimmy, a 21-year-old bear who has lived at the center since birth. Born in captivity, Jimmy was raised by humans and never learned the survival skills needed for life in the wild. Because of this, he’ll always need care.
Despite his massive size — over nine feet tall and weighing more than 1,500 pounds — Jimmy is anything but fierce. His sweet, affectionate nature has made him a cherished part of the center’s animal family. What looks like a fearsome giant is actually a gentle soul full of love.
The sanctuary doesn’t welcome public visitors, prioritizing the animals’ peace and well-being above all else. Jimmy and the other bears live in spacious, natural habitats with nutritious meals and activities designed to stimulate their instincts.
For Jimmy, this place isn’t just shelter — it’s a life of safety, dignity, and joy. Thanks to the Kowalcziks’ compassion and dedication, Jimmy thrives in an environment built on trust and kindness.
Their work proves that true wildlife rescue isn’t just about survival — it’s about giving animals like Jimmy a life filled with comfort, respect, and genuine happiness.
