Engravings on Ammunition Linked to Charlie Kirk’s Alleged Killer Revealed After Arrest

A Utah judge has ruled that the man accused of killing Charlie Kirk will remain in custody without bail, as investigators release new findings about evidence discovered near the crime scene.

The suspect, Tyler Robinson, is currently being held in Utah County Jail following the decision by Judge Shawn Rice Howell. Court filings, obtained by CNN, confirm that Robinson—who has no previous criminal record—faces several preliminary charges, including aggravated murder, felony firearm discharge, and obstruction of justice. Although formal charges are still pending, authorities have confirmed that the alleged weapon has been recovered.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls announced that investigators located a high-powered bolt-action rifle in a wooded area where Robinson had fled. The rifle is now being analyzed at the FBI Laboratory. In addition to the weapon, investigators also collected shoe prints, palm impressions, and markings from his forearm for forensic review.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox revealed more about the investigation earlier today, stating that ammunition found near the rifle carried engraved phrases. Cox read several of these inscriptions during a press briefing, noting their unusual nature. According to experts, many of the engravings appear tied to internet culture.

Jamie Cohen, a Queens College professor who specializes in digital culture, explained that the messages referenced memes, video games, and online jokes—many of which lose their meaning outside their niche communities. “Memes contain multitudes,” Cohen said, emphasizing that they are designed for quick sharing and often shed their original context.

Some inscriptions referenced the video game Helldivers 2, including arrow sequences that mimic controller inputs used to call in a bombing strike. Another phrase, “Hey, fascist! Catch!”, was also drawn from the game’s satirical dialogue. The engraving “Bella Ciao” referred to the famous World War II Italian resistance anthem, while “Notices bulges OwO what’s this?” traced back to the furry subculture, known as a parody of awkward online flirting.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the engravings signal intent or ideology. Cohen noted that memes tied to extremist movements or acts of violence can serve a double purpose: speaking to insiders while simultaneously provoking public attention.

Further details about Robinson’s arrest emerged Friday. According to federal law enforcement sources, Robinson’s father identified him in photos released by authorities and directly confronted him. Robinson admitted he was the suspect and confessed to killing Kirk, even telling his father he would rather take his own life than surrender. His father, concerned for his safety, reached out to a family pastor, who also worked as a court security officer. Together, they calmed Robinson and alerted the U.S. Marshals Service, which moved in to take him into custody.

FBI Director Kash Patel later confirmed that Robinson was arrested late Thursday night. Utah Attorney General Derek Brown has said the state has not ruled out the death penalty, stressing that “everything is on the table.” Both Governor Cox and former President Donald Trump stated publicly that they support pursuing capital punishment in this case.

Meanwhile, online activity connected to Robinson’s family has come under scrutiny. A social media account believed to belong to his mother, Amber Jones Robinson, was recently deleted, though officials have not commented on why.

Robinson, a 22-year-old scholarship student at Utah State University, lived in a six-bedroom home in Washington, Utah, with his family. Reports suggest he had become more politically outspoken in recent years. During a family dinner shortly before Kirk’s visit to Utah Valley University, Robinson allegedly mentioned the activist’s appearance at the event.

Authorities confirmed Robinson’s arrest occurred at around 11 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, in southern Utah. By Friday morning, Governor Cox and FBI Director Patel praised the swift response of law enforcement, noting that more than 11,000 public tips have already been processed. “In 33 hours, we made historic progress for Charlie,” Patel said. “This is proof that great law enforcement gets results.”

While Robinson’s exact motive remains unclear, officials emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing. For now, he remains in custody without bail as the legal process unfolds.
