How I Turned My Neighbor’s Absurd Playground Rules Into the Best Lesson for Our Community

When we moved into our dream home in Silver Springs, we imagined our kids, Jared and Brooke, finally having the space to play freely—until our neighbor, Kristen, had other plans. She left a typed list of on our door, dictating everything from how loud our kids could laugh (no more than 60 decibels) to banning running on our own grass. But the final straw came when she for “laughing too loud.”

Seeing my kids come home heartbroken, their little faces crushed by her harsh words, lit a fire in me. If Kristen wanted to play the rulemaker, I’d give her a taste of her own medicine—my way.

That night, I crafted my own —so outrageous they were impossible to take seriously. Dogs in booties? Laughter only allowed between 2:00–2:15 p.m.? Kristen’s lawn required written permission to look at? I printed copies and slipped them into every mailbox on the street—except hers.

The next morning, the neighborhood erupted in laughter. Mrs. Patterson nearly fell over reading it. Mr. Rodriguez was in stitches. By the time Kristen stormed over, she was the joke—not my kids.

Then came the grand finale. I took the kids to the playground with a , dramatically announcing their decibel levels as they played. “Fifty-eight decibels! Still in the clear!” Neighbors gathered, grinning, as Kristen lost her mind, screaming about “order” and threatening to call the cops.

And call them she did.

When the officers arrived, they took one look at my kids happily swinging, my toy meter, and Kristen’s hysterical ranting—then arrested her for disturbing the peace.

Now? Kristen avoids us like the plague. My kids play outside until the streetlights turn on, laughing as loud as they want. And sometimes, just for fun, I still pull out that noise meter.

Moral of the story? Never mess with a mom protecting her kids’ joy. And if you try to kill fun with ridiculous rules, be ready for karma to hand you a clipboard of your own. 😉
