Heart-Wrenching Reason ‘The Perfect Neighbor’ Included Raw Reactions of Ajike Owens’ Children

Every moment in Netflix’s The Perfect Neighbor is emotionally shattering, but none hit harder than the scene where Ajike Owens’ children learn of their mother’s death. Some of her kids witnessed the shooting, and the film captures the devastating moment their father broke the news of her passing.
Bodycam footage shows a community in anguish as word spread that Ajike didn’t survive. Her partner, father to their four children, faced the unbearable task of telling them. Holding them close, he said, “Today’s been a terrible day. Something awful happened. You saw it, you felt it, right? We all love Mom. I have to tell you—she’s not coming back.”
A Difficult Choice
The documentary’s creator, Geeta Gandbhir, spoke in an interview about the tough call to include this footage. She and Ajike’s mother, Pamela Dias, carefully discussed what to show from that tragic day.
In a conversation with USA Today, Geeta explained, “If we keep these events hidden, they’ll keep happening. Shining a light on them inspires people to act.”
Pamela Dias reflected on watching her grandchildren’s raw grief. “It broke me. My heart shattered,” she said. “They’re so young. Imagine what they felt, learning their mom was gone forever.”
A Family’s Resilience
Pamela now cares for the children, noting, “They’re still hurting deeply, but they’re incredibly strong.” She added, “Our tragedy has sparked change and purpose.” The family chose to share their pain publicly to ensure it’s seen and acknowledged.
