Sydney Sweeney Faces Backlash and Boycott Threats Over Controversial Ad

Sydney Sweeney has found herself at the center of controversy after appearing in a new ad that has sparked boycott calls online.
The timing of the ad added fuel to the fire, as it came shortly after public anger over an American Eagle campaign. In the clip, Sweeney says, “My jeans are blue,” while a narrator chimes in, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
Many critics slammed the wordplay, arguing it hinted at ideas of genetic superiority, while others said the campaign reduced her to an object — comparing it to Brooke Shields’ infamous Calvin Klein ad from the 1980s.
Social media quickly erupted. Some comments were harsh, such as: “Perfect, won’t be watching it.” Others, however, rallied behind her, urging: “Do your thing, Sydney! Don’t let those haters get to you!”
In response, American Eagle released a statement dismissing the backlash, insisting there were no racial or genetic undertones. The company clarified that the campaign was strictly about denim, saying, “Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Despite the controversy, Sweeney continued promoting her film, Americana — a story about people entangled in violence surrounding the theft of a Native American ghost shirt.
Reviews have been mixed: while some critics called the movie slow and unengaging, others praised the cast and writing. Americana is set to premiere in theaters on August 15.
