Cow Escapes Slaughterhouse, Finds Freedom Thanks to Community Support

In San Tan Valley, Arizona, a cow scheduled for slaughter made a daring escape in August, racing through traffic and stopping by a pond before police captured her and returned her to the processing plant. She had only days left to live — but her story took a different turn.

When Aimee Takaha, founder of Aimee’s Farm Animal Sanctuary, saw the footage of the runaway cow, she knew she had to intervene. She contacted the animal’s owner, who demanded $2,500 within 24 hours if the sanctuary wanted to save her.

On August 25, Takaha turned to social media, sharing the urgent plea with her followers. The community responded immediately. Within just 12 hours, more than 60 donors came together to raise the full amount needed. “Don’t you dare slaughter her tomorrow. Bring her here,” Takaha recalled saying once she secured the funds.

The next day, the cow was delivered safely to the sanctuary. Takaha named her Mootilda and promised that from the moment she stepped onto the property, she would know nothing but love. “She is a warrior,” Takaha wrote, praising the cow’s courage and determination to survive.

Since her arrival, Mootilda has thrived. Updates on the sanctuary’s Facebook page show her enjoying “happy buck zoomies,” adjusting to her new home, and even growing close to another rescue bull named Adorabull. Takaha joked that a “wedding” may be in their future.

Aimee’s Farm Animal Sanctuary, home to many animals with special needs, has embraced Mootilda as part of the family. For Takaha, the rescue represents more than just saving one life: “She’s not my cow — she’s our cow. She’s the community cow.”
