Amber Marshall Reflects on 17 Seasons of Heartland: Life, Loss, and the Unbreakable Bond with Her On-Screen Family

For 17 seasons, Amber Marshall has brought Amy Fleming to life on the hit series Heartland, a role she has embodied for more than half her life. Now 35 and filming the show’s latest season in the rolling landscapes of Alberta, Canada, Marshall reflects on the unique journey of growing up alongside her character.
The series, which follows a family’s life on a ranch centered around healing horses, has found a massive new audience, recently breaking into the top five most-streamed shows in the United States. Marshall credits the show’s enduring appeal to its authentic heart. “We’ve truly become a family,” she says of the cast and crew. “You can’t fake that kind of connection. We’ve all grown up together.”
This real-life bond has been a source of strength, particularly through difficult times. The sudden passing of co-star Robert Cormier, who played Amy’s love interest Finn, was a devastating blow. “It was heartbreaking,” Marshall shares. “Robert was so much fun to work with. Losing him reminded us how precious our time together is.”
Just as in real life, Amy’s journey on the show has been marked by both love and loss. After grieving her husband Ty, Amy is slowly opening her heart again in recent seasons, sparking fan speculation about a potential romance with neighbor Sam Langston. Marshall remains coy about what’s ahead, noting that “life has a funny way of surprising you.”
Through it all—both the challenges and the joys—Marshall remains grateful to tell a story that resonates with multiple generations. “Families tell us they watch Heartland together,” she says. “It’s rare to find something that brings everyone to the couch.” For Marshall, the show’s message of healing, family, and connection is more important than ever, and she is honored to be the steady heart at its center.
