I Lost My Job Only to Find Out That My Husband’s Mistress Was Responsible for It All.
I was let go for copying a project I had dedicated nearly a year to developing by myself. It turns out my husband was behind it all, and he did it for a woman who meant far more to him than I ever realized. Thus, my quest for revenge began immediately.
As I made my way down the hallway to my boss’s office, my heart raced with eagerness.
This is it, the moment when all my dedication will finally be acknowledged.
For almost a year, I had immersed myself in this project, refining every aspect, attracting investors, and creating something I believed would be revolutionary.
I could already envision the accolades, the promotion, and perhaps even the opportunity to lead a larger team. A faint smile appeared on my lips as I knocked on the door.
“Come in,” my boss's gruff voice responded.
Mr. Thornton, my boss, wasn’t alone. Callie was seated next to him, her hands neatly folded in her lap. Her gaze met mine with an unsettling serenity.
“Alice, please take a seat,” Mr. Thornton instructed, motioning to the chair before his desk.
Puzzled, I complied.
What is Callie doing here?
The smile I had just worn moments ago vanished as I glanced between them.
“I don’t want to prolong this,” Mr. Thornton began, rifling through papers on his desk. “We have a problem. Callie has informed me that the project you submitted last week… wasn’t entirely your own.”
I blinked, bewildered.
“What do you mean? It’s absolutely mine. I’ve been working on it for nearly a year.”
I turned to face Callie, disbelief churning within me.
“I’m sorry, Alice,” she started, her tone dripping with insincerity.
“But this idea originated with me. I submitted the proposal two weeks ago. The concept, the specifics… they’re all mine. I have no idea how you got hold of it, but I can’t let this go.”
I stared at her, my mind racing.
“That’s impossible. I’ve dedicated months to this, Callie! You weren’t even here when I began. How could it belong to you?”
Mr. Thornton leaned forward, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Alice, I’ve reviewed the submissions. Callie’s project was submitted first, complete with all the detailed information. I’m sorry, but it appears you’ve taken her work.”
“I didn’t steal anything. This is my project. I’ve been involved from the start. You know that.”
Callie tilted her head, pretending to show sympathy. “I didn’t want it to come to this, but… I had no choice.”
“Mr. Thornton, this is a misunderstanding. Please, allow me to explain…”
“I’m afraid there’s nothing to clarify,” he interrupted, rising from his chair. “Given the circumstances, we have no option but to terminate your employment.”
I felt as though the ground had been pulled out from under me.
Fired? Just like that?
“Callie, you may leave now,” Mr. Thornton directed, nodding at her.
She stood gracefully, offering me a pitying smile before departing the office. The door closed softly behind her, but the sound echoed in my mind.
I turned back to Mr. Thornton.
“You can’t truly believe this. You’ve seen my work. You know my capabilities.”
“I’m sorry, Alice. The evidence is against you.”
Without another word, I stood up, my legs unsteady as I exited the office. My mind was spinning.
How could this be occurring? How had she managed this?
I stumbled into the restroom, my reflection in the mirror nearly unrecognizable. I splashed water on my face, attempting to calm the storm of emotions.
How could Callie have known all the specifics?
Then, like a flash of insight, it struck me. Harris. My husband. He was the only person who had access to the project.
Could he… betray me?
I grabbed my bag and hurried home. The need for answers was consuming me.
Harris had always been so considerate, so caring. He would surprise me with flowers and little notes, even bringing my favorite coffee home after work.
It was these small gestures that made me feel guilty for doubting him initially. But now, with everything happening at work, I couldn’t shake the growing suspicion within me.
Recently, he’d been “working late” more frequently. He’d go on business trips, sometimes staying overnight at the office, and when I inquired about it, he’d dismiss it.
“Just busy, you know how it goes.”
Harris was in the shower. I immediately began searching for evidence. I went through his belongings—his jacket pockets, his briefcase, and ultimately, his phone.
That’s when I discovered it. A restaurant receipt from a night he claimed he was working late. Wine, lobsters for two, desserts for two. He hadn’t been with colleagues. It was clear.
I continued digging into his phone. He was cautious, but not cautious enough. My worst fears were realized. Harris assisted Callie in stealing my project. She was his mistress!
It hurt, but I refused to crumble. Harris and Callie thought they could ruin me, both personally and professionally. But I wasn’t going to allow that. I had other plans.
My last day at the office felt surreal. I had spent years walking these halls, investing my heart into every project, but today was different. Today, I had a scheme.
The farewell party was organized, and I had personally invited all my colleagues, including Callie. My husband also agreed to support me.
Mr. Thornton had been a tougher sell, but I knew precisely how to persuade him.
“Look, Mr. Thornton,” I said with a calm smile, “there are some revelations I’m going to make that could significantly impact your reputation if you’re not present.”
“I don’t know what you’ve concocted this time, Alice, but I’ll be there.”
And that was all I needed. The stage was set. Every detail of this party had been meticulously arranged—just like my projects always had been.
As guests gathered in the conference room, the atmosphere buzzed with casual conversation. People were laughing, sipping drinks, and offering well wishes for my “new endeavors.”
I stepped up to the front of the room.
“Thank you, everyone, for coming,” I began, my voice steady, though internally I was a whirlwind of emotions.
“Before I depart, I wanted to share something very special with you all. This is my final project, the one I’ve been working on for the past year.”
I continued, my gaze sweeping across the room, ensuring everyone was attentive.
“This is the same project you’ve heard about recently, the one that was… well, let’s say, subject to some controversy.”
I paused, allowing the tension to build.
“But today, I’m going to reveal the unique details, the aspects that no one else could have known, because I kept them confidential.”
I clicked the remote in my hand, and the screen behind me illuminated with the first slide.
It showcased the core of my work, the installation concept that my boss had dismissed as “just an idea on paper.” But it wasn’t. I had been quietly developing it all along.
Gasps filled the room as the actual installation appeared on the next slide. The room fell silent. Even Mr. Thornton, who had been leaning back, unimpressed, sat up straight, his eyes wide.
“I’ve been collaborating with an investor on this project,” I said, glancing at Callie from the corner of my eye.
“And today, I’m thrilled to announce that we’re moving forward. Together.”
I gestured to the back of the room, where the investor I had personally brought on board stood up and waved. He confirmed everything I had said.
“This project is proceeding, but only with Alice’s involvement.”
Callie’s face drained of color. She realized it was over. Without me, she couldn’t complete what she had stolen. But I wasn’t finished yet.
I turned on the pink lights for a greater effect and unveiled the final surprise. It was a large cake featuring a photo of Harris and Callie together. There were letters on top, “THEY STOLE MY LIFE.”
“In case you were wondering how Callie had access to my work. My husband, Harris.”
The room was silent after I dropped the bombshell. Harris and Callie stood there, their faces void of color, speechless. Everyone stared at them. Mr. Thornton, still looking stunned, finally broke the silence, extending his hand for the deal.
“Alice, I… I had no idea. I’m sorry for what occurred. We’d love to have you back. With a promotion, of course.”
I regarded him for a moment, weighing his offer. But after everything, I knew I needed more than just a position.
“Thank you, Mr. Thornton, but I believe I’m finished here. I have my own project now, and I’m moving forward with the investor’s backing.”
He nodded, understanding. “I wish you the best, Alice. You deserve it.”
After that, everything happened quickly. I filed for divorce from Harris without looking back. It was the final step in closing a painful chapter.
After all that had transpired, I knew I needed time for myself. I needed to heal, to breathe, to regain my strength. So, I packed my bags and left for a much-needed vacation.
As the plane took off, I felt a sense of freedom I hadn’t experienced in years. The past had tried to shatter me, but instead, I had risen from the ashes of betrayal. I was ready to face the world again, stronger than ever.
