My father-in-law threatened me after I discovered him with his mistress in a café, but karma intervened at the perfect time.
When Tessa required a moment to recharge between meetings and work tasks, she went to a café prepared to boost her energy. Upon arrival, she unexpectedly encountered her father-in-law, Richard. But what unfolds when his lunch companion isn’t Tessa’s mother-in-law?
I never envisioned finding myself entangled in a scandal. Yet, there I was, standing in a café across town, gazing at my father-in-law, Richard. He appeared quite pleased with himself as he kissed a woman who was certainly not my mother-in-law. My heart raced, and I could feel my face flush with embarrassment.
I felt mortified for both him and myself.
How did I end up in this situation?
Let’s rewind a bit.
I married Daniel about a year ago. It felt like something straight out of a romantic comedy. We met unexpectedly at a florist because I wanted flowers for my mother, and Daniel had entered to evade someone he recognized outside.
Daniel’s family was wealthy, and I mean really wealthy. It was old money that granted them great power, and they were aware of it. They were quite open about believing he could do better than a simple wedding gown designer like me.
"You know that doesn't matter to me, Tessa," Daniel said during dinner one night. "You're what I want. Not wealth or influence or position."
And that was sufficient for me. Daniel loved me, and despite their early hesitations, they eventually accepted me. They even assisted me in landing a job at a company owned by Richard's friend, Charles.
Before long, I was not only a wedding gown designer but was also developing a line of fashionable clothing. It was far better and more profitable than I had ever imagined.
Later, they even supported Daniel in establishing a small marketing agency, which thrived. It appeared that everything was going smoothly. We were content in our careers, and our family life was filled with joyful moments rather than drama.
I thought we had finally found stability among us all. But then this happened.
I had spent the entire morning running work-related errands, preparing for a new client’s arrival. I needed various fabrics in different shades of purple. As time passed, my stomach started to grumble, and I knew it was time for lunch.
"Let’s grab a bite, Tessa," I reminded myself as I entered the café.
As I walked in, contemplating all the menu options I enjoyed, I spotted them.
There was Richard, my father-in-law, with his back to me, leaning closely to a woman who giggled and touched his arm. Then, they kissed.
I felt my stomach drop. I recognized that woman! She was Elizabeth, Charles’ wife. My boss, Charles. Panic flooded through me. I turned to exit quietly, my mind racing, but Richard noticed me. He leaped from his seat, nearly spilling his coffee.
"Wait!" he barked, hurrying over. "What do you think you’re doing, Tessa?"
I attempted to maintain a steady voice, but my legs trembled. Richard had always intimidated me. There was something about his demeanor that suggested the entire world should bend to his will.
"I was just leaving…" I replied hastily.
He seized my arm, his grip firm and nearly painful. I was aware there would be a bruise there by morning.
"Listen closely, girl," he growled. "If you tell anyone about this, I swear I’ll ruin your life. Do you understand?"
I stared at him, dumbfounded.
"Are you seriously threatening me, Richard?" I asked.
"Take it however you want," he snapped loudly, his eyes scanning to ensure no one was eavesdropping. "But if you utter a word of this to my wife, you’ll lose that job I helped you secure. Daniel will lose his business. And this nice, comfortable life you’ve built… it will all vanish."
I yanked my arm free, fury bubbling within me.
"You're absurd, Richard. You think you can just intimidate me into silence?"
"Lower your voice!" he hissed, glancing nervously over his shoulder.
But I couldn’t restrain myself.
"Why? So no one hears that you're a deceitful liar? That you’re here with Elizabeth, of all people?"
Richard's face turned ashen.
"You know Elizabeth?" he asked, clearly not connecting the dots.
"Richard, really? Of course, I know her. She’s Charles’ wife. You know, Charles… your best friend and my boss?"
His eyes widened, panic flashing across his features.
"Look, this is none of your concern. Just keep your mouth shut."
"Or what?" I challenged, crossing my arms. "You think you can intimidate me into silence? Ruin my life because you can't control yourself?"
He stepped closer, the scent of his cologne so overpowering that I recoiled.
"You don’t know who you’re dealing with," he said.
"Oh, I think I do," I retorted. "You’re a coward, Richard. And you’re about to discover that karma has a way of catching up with people like you."
At that moment, Richard’s phone rang. He pulled it out, still glaring at me. His face paled upon seeing the caller ID.
"It’s Charles," he muttered.
He answered, his tone suddenly soft and cautious.
"Charles, hey… yeah. I’m just in a meeting right now."
I observed his face intently as he spoke. His expression shifted quickly from nervousness to terror.
"What? No, I haven’t seen Elizabeth. Well, I… no… I didn’t. Look, I can explain!"
Richard abruptly pulled the phone away from his ear, his face devoid of color. He stared at it, then back at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"What did you do, Tessa?" he demanded.
I raised an eyebrow.
"Me? I didn’t do anything, Richard. I’ve been right in front of you the whole time. Sounds like your actions are catching up to you."
It turns out karma was quick to act that day. Charles had been trying to contact his wife all afternoon, eager to inform her about his reservations at a new restaurant for dinner that evening.
And when she finally answered, it was during my confrontation with Richard. While Elizabeth lied about her location, Charles had overheard our entire argument. He didn’t need a full explanation: he grasped enough to understand what was occurring.
He had long suspected Elizabeth of having an affair.
Charles' response was immediate. He ended their friendship on the spot and quickly withdrew his investments from Richard's company. Without those funds, I could see Richard’s life rapidly spiraling toward bankruptcy.
Meanwhile, I received an unexpected call from Charles later that week.
"I'll be back at the office tomorrow," he said. "Let’s meet in my office after lunch."
"Thank you for your discretion," he remarked, though we both recognized I hadn’t been discreet at all.
But I did manage to capture a photo of Richard and Elizabeth before he noticed me. After the confrontation, I sent that photo to Charles and my husband.
"I'd like to offer you a promotion," he said. "To lead designer. More responsibility, more pay. You won’t need to rely on Richard’s money."
"Wow, thank you…" I replied, astonished.
"Just keep up the excellent work, Tessa. And don’t let individuals like Richard push you around."
So, here I am now, sitting in my office with a view while Richard scrambles to piece together his crumbling empire. Daniel informed his mother, who immediately expelled Richard.
And me? I’m just a happy girl who was in the right place at the right time, ensuring that Richard received what he deserved.
What would you have done?

My Ex-MIL Sent Me a Huge Gift Box for My Birthday – When I Opened It, I Ran Out of My House in Horror. When Serena finally cuts ties with her marriage through a divorce, she encounters someone who provides her with support. However, her ex-mother-in-law has other intentions and wants Serena to return to Ryan. Eventually, frustrated with Serena's resistance, Helen sends her a memorable gift box that Serena will never forget.
I always anticipated that turning thirty-four would feel a bit strange, but I didn’t foresee it being this bizarre.
My life had undergone a series of transformations in just the past year. First, there was the divorce from Ryan. We had been married for six years and had two children, Chloe and Jacob, during that time. I’ll admit, the initial years were wonderful as we navigated life together, but as time passed, things became challenging.
Being married to Ryan felt like dragging a deadweight through life. He was lazy. He lacked ambition and spent most of his time drinking outside or at bars with friends while I balanced my job and raised our kids.
"Enough is enough," I told myself one day when I woke up to find about ten beer cans scattered on the coffee table.
But it wasn’t until I discovered that he was cheating on me with the young new bartender at his frequented bar that things came to a head.
"I can explain, Serena!" he exclaimed when I first confronted him about it. "It’s not what you think. Mimi is just a friend."
"I’ve heard that line before," I yelled. "Pack your things and leave!"
"Where do you want me to go?" he asked, sounding pathetic.
