Young Daughter’s Life Cut Short

Like most teenagers, her hopes revolved around growing up, attending college, seeing the world, and being surrounded by friends. Twelve-year-old Taylor Smith from Johnson City, Tennessee, shared those same dreams. She spent her days close to her family, enjoyed time with friends, and was a devoted fan of the show Doctor Who.
Taylor put those hopes into words in a letter she wrote to her future self in April 2013. She carefully sealed it inside a box in her bedroom, clearly labeled: “To be opened by Taylor Smith on April 12, 2023 only (unless said otherwise).”
Tragically, she never had the chance to discover how those dreams might unfold. Only a few months after writing the letter, Taylor passed away due to complications caused by the sudden onset of pneumonia.
Her parents, Tim and Mary Ellen Smith, were devastated. The loss of their daughter felt impossible to accept.
While going through Taylor’s belongings one day, they came across the letter. Deeply moved by her words, they chose to share it online, hoping it might bring comfort and inspiration to others.
When Mary Ellen shared the letter, she wrote: “I can’t physically resurrect her, I can’t bring her back, but I’m so grateful people have been inspired by her story.”
Below are the words Taylor lovingly wrote to herself.
Dear Taylor,
How’s life going? Things are pretty simple right now (ten years in your past). I know I’m late for you, but for me this is early—so congratulations on graduating high school! If you didn’t, go back and keep trying. Get that diploma! Are you (are we) in college? If not, that’s okay. We usually have good reasons for our choices.
Don’t forget—it’s Allana’s 11th birthday today! Wow, 11 already? In my time, she just turned one. I couldn’t go to her party though, because I was in Cranks, Kentucky on my very first mission trip. I’ve only been home for six days!
That reminds me—how is your relationship with GOD? Have you prayed, worshiped, read the Bible, or served the Lord lately? If not, get up and do it NOW. I don’t care where we are in life—do it. He was mocked, beaten, tortured, and crucified for you. A sinless man who never did anything wrong to you or anyone else.
Have you gone on more mission trips? Have you traveled outside the country yet? Have you flown on a plane?
Is Doctor Who still airing? If not, which regeneration did it end with? You should really watch some Doctor Who. Later though—you need to finish reading your own wise advice first!
Do you have your own place yet? If we’re in college, what’s our major? Right now, I want to be a lawyer.
Have you been to Dollywood lately? Their newest ride right now is the Wild Eagle, and it’s amazing!
I’m also thinking about selling my iPad and getting an iPad mini. Don’t forget to tell your kids that we’re older than the tablet! I even attached a drawing of an iPad so you can show them.
I think that’s everything for now. Just remember—it’s been ten years since I wrote this. A lot has happened, both good and bad. That’s life, and you have to move forward with it.
Sincerely,
Taylor Smith
Heartfelt words from a young soul taken from her family far too soon.
