Mayor Mamdani Furious Over Trump’s Immigration Crackdown After ICE Detains City Council Worker

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani exploded in anger on Monday following the detention of a City Council staff member by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during what authorities described as a standard immigration court hearing, transforming a routine enforcement operation into yet another point of contention for Democratic assaults on federal immigration enforcement. The event took place on Long Island, where Mamdani swiftly labeled the detention a “direct attack on our democracy” in a post on X and insisted on the worker’s prompt release—rhetoric more fitting for a constitutional emergency than a typical immigration procedure. The person, reportedly a data analyst employed by the City Council for roughly a year, was subsequently moved to a detention center in Manhattan. And isn’t it wonderful to learn that an illegal immigrant has been managing data for the nation’s biggest city?“I am furious to learn that a New York City Council staff member was detained in Nassau County by federal immigration officers during a routine immigration hearing,” the progressive mayor raged. “This is an attack on our democracy, our city, and our principles. I am demanding his immediate release and will keep monitoring this closely.
No, friend. Enforcing immigration laws isn’t an assault on democracy—it’s allowing a constant flow of criminal illegal immigrants into the country while political figures look the other way.Oh, but speaking of assaults…Department of Homeland Security representatives stated the City Council employee was in the United States unlawfully after arriving on a B-2 tourist visa in 2017 and overstaying the required departure date. DHS noted the individual was never granted legal permission to stay or work in the country.
According to DHS, the employee also has a criminal record that includes an arrest for assault. The department did not disclose further details about the charge.
“He had no legal right to be in the United States,” department spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated, per ABC News. “Under Secretary [Kristi] Noem, criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the United States. If you enter our country illegally and violate our laws, we will locate you, and we will arrest you.”City officials countered, insisting the employee was “following all proper steps,” claiming he possessed work authorization valid through October and maintaining there was no evidence the detention stemmed from anything other than his immigration status. In other words, the familiar line: the only offense was being in the country illegally. As though breaching federal immigration law—and holding a government position without lawful status—were some trivial oversight rather than sufficient grounds for ICE intervention.Democrats, predictably, showed little interest in examining inconvenient facts about the employee’s immigration situation. And when it came to the reported assault arrest, there was even less willingness to address it.Instead, the focus stayed laser-sharp: immediate release, no questions permitted.“DHS confirmed that this employee attended a routine court hearing and was nevertheless detained.
They offered no other justification for his detention,” NYC Council Speaker Julie Menin (D) stated during a Monday press briefing. “On the contrary, he was a City Council employee who was doing everything correctly. He appeared in court when required.”If he were truly “doing everything correctly,” he wouldn’t have overstayed his visa. He would have followed the necessary procedures to remain legally. Instead of engaging in theatrical fury, Menin might consider investigating how an alleged illegal immigrant with an assault arrest ended up on the payroll of the country’s largest city government.New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, also condemned the data analyst’s detention, perpetuating the familiar Democratic pattern of denouncing immigration enforcement while ignoring their own role in enabling the situation through “sanctuary” policies.“This is precisely what occurs when immigration enforcement is weaponized,” she posted on X. “Detaining individuals during routine court appearances does not enhance safety.
It undermines trust, spreads fear, and violates fundamental principles of fairness.”Understood? Enforcement equals ‘weaponization.’ Being in the country illegally but ‘doing everything correctly’ is acceptable. This is the current Democratic stance.By the way, enforcement should be ‘weaponized’ and aimed at individuals in the country illegally—particularly those with documented assault histories. That isn’t controversial. That’s basic ‘Managing a Major Country 101.’The true assault on democracy isn’t ICE enforcing the law. It’s the shameless hypocrisy of New York City’s progressive leadership, who erupt over every illegal immigrant detained by federal agents while disregarding the reality that an illegal immigrant with an assault arrest may have been quietly working for the largest municipal government in the nation.Mamdani and Menin can shout all they want. The facts remain unchanged, and so does the law.
