Michelle Obama Dispels Presidential Run Rumors, Stating Americans Are “Lying” About Wanting a Woman President

Former First Lady Michelle Obama, 61, firmly rejected ongoing public pressure to launch a presidential campaign, asserting that the American public is “lying” about their desire to see a woman in the White House.

Speaking at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on November 5th during a live conversation with Tracee Ellis Ross about her new book, The Look, Michelle Obama stated, “You’re not ready for a woman. You are not. So don’t waste my time.”

Citing the 2024 Election

She directly referenced the 2024 presidential election results—in which Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris—as evidence of her belief: “As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready.”

She elaborated on her stance as the audience applauded: “We got a lot of growing up to do, and there are still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman, and we saw it.”

A Consistent Refusal

Despite continuous pleas from supporters for a “Michelle 2028” campaign, the former First Lady has consistently and publicly shut down any notion of pursuing a career in politics since at least 2012.

  • 2018: She told Today, “Absolutely not… I’ve never wanted to be a politician… Politics is not my thing. It’s as simple as that.”

  • 2016: During a South by Southwest panel, she explicitly stated she would “not run for president,” citing her then-teenage daughters, Sasha and Malia, as a factor.

Her husband, former President Barack Obama, also backed her position in 2016, telling SiriusXM’s Sway in the Morning that Michelle “does not have the patience or the inclination to actually be a candidate herself.”

Michelle Obama is currently focused on various projects, including her book The Look and her podcast IMO, noting that she feels “freeing” enjoyment in making her own choices now that her children are grown and she and Barack have left the White House.
