Mother-in-Law Hospitalized, Father-in-Law Moves In, Tries to Make DIL His Maid—She Responds with a Rental Agreement

The initial decision to let her father-in-law, Frank, move in after his wife, Sarah, was hospitalized seemed like the right choice for the narrator, Mara. Frank was completely dependent on Sarah for everything, so her husband, Brian, suggested the stay, which Mara saw as a favor. However, her good intentions quickly became her first mistake.

The Transformation from Guest to Demanding Boss

Frank was initially polite, but within a week, his attitude shifted. He began making small demands: a casual request for coffee, a sandwich, and then ordering Mara to iron his shirts. He was treating her like his personal maid. When Mara tried to establish boundaries, Frank would dismiss her with a grin, saying, “Oh, come on, sweetheart, you’re so good at this.”

The situation became unbearable when Frank hosted an impromptu poker night in their living room without permission. Mara was forced to serve his friends, refilling drinks and snacks like hired help. The final straw came after the guests left, when she overheard Frank telling Brian, “That’s how a woman should treat a man.” This was coupled with the frightening realization that Brian, her once thoughtful husband, was starting to mimic his father’s sexist habits, expecting service and leaving messes.

The Unconventional “Rental Agreement”

That night, Mara made a decisive move. She sat down and drafted a “rental agreement”—not for money, but to set non-negotiable rules. The document covered basic expectations: everyone cleans up their own mess, there will be no sexist remarks, people must do what they are capable of, and respect is mandatory.

When Mara presented the papers at breakfast, Frank’s face turned red as he argued, “I’m your guest!”

Mara stood firm: “You’re not a guest — you’re part of this household, and that means contributing like everyone else.”

When Brian joined the argument, suggesting the rules were “a bit much,” Mara snapped: “What’s much is being treated like a servant in my own home. You’re both adults — start acting like it.” She gave Frank an ultimatum: follow the rules or find another place to stay. He was left speechless.

A New Beginning for Everyone

When Sarah eventually returned from the hospital, Mara was nervous about her reaction. However, after reading the agreement, Sarah smiled, admitted she had been exhausted from decades of catering to Frank, and declared: “Mutual respect. That’s new. I like it. It’s time he learns.”

Watching Frank clumsily dry dishes next to Sarah later that day, Mara felt a deep sense of relief. Sarah was no longer carrying the burden alone, and Mara was no longer invisible in her own home. When Brian asked if Frank would stick to the rules, Mara smiled: “He doesn’t have a choice. Because this time, we’re all living by the rules.”
