13-Year-Old Boy Killed in Queens Shooting Saves 5 Lives Through Organ Donation

A heartbreaking tragedy has sparked an extraordinary act of hope.
Sanjay Samuel, a 13-year-old boy from Cambria Heights, Queens, was fatally shot in the head on his way to school Monday morning, in a parking lot outside a Dunkin’ Donuts. The suspect, a 16-year-old male, is now in custody and faces up to 25 years in prison.
But from unimaginable loss came a powerful legacy.
Sanjay’s family made the courageous decision to donate his organs — a gift that would go on to save five lives and bring light into the darkest of moments.
His heart was transplanted into another 13-year-old boy, giving him a second chance at life.
A 15-year-old teen received his liver.
Two adults in their 50s received his lungs, kidneys, and pancreas.
In total, Sanjay donated six organs — a rare and profound contribution that medical experts say is a testament to both his health and the generosity of his family.
Leonard Achan, President of LiveOnNY, the nonprofit that coordinates organ recovery in the region, spoke about the impact of Sanjay’s gift.
“The pain of losing Sanjay is immeasurable, but his legacy will live on through those he saved. He gave the gift of life to four people directly, and his tissues will help many more. We are deeply grateful to Sanjay and his family for their selfless choice.”
For Sanjay’s father, the decision to donate was clear.
“We knew this is what he would have wanted,” he said. “Even in death, our son is helping others. That brings us peace.”
The recipients of Sanjay’s organs now carry pieces of his spirit across New York, Ohio, and Washington, D.C. — living proof that even in the face of senseless violence, compassion can still triumph.
Sanjay’s story is not just one of loss.
It’s one of courage.
Of love.
Of a young life cut short — but whose heartbeat continues in others.
Because sometimes, the greatest legacy isn’t how long you live…
It’s how you give.
