My Best Friend’s Spouse Concealed Bottles from Her – His Explanation Truly Shook Me to My Core
When Sadie, Lori, and their spouses head out for the weekend — excited to celebrate a birthday — Lori's husband, Ben, shares a vague message about a secret he's harboring. Sadie finds herself torn between keeping that secret or confiding in her best friend — perhaps some secrets aren’t meant to be kept?
Sadie and I have been best friends since high school. We grew up alongside each other and developed together. At home, Lori was treated like another daughter.
“Lori,” my mom would inquire each evening, “is Lori coming to dinner?”
We experienced everything together, including the fact that we dated and are now married to two best friends — Benjamin and Keith. I vividly remember meeting them at school. I was sure I would end up with Benjamin, yet Keith ultimately won my heart, while Lori and Benjamin found their perfect match in one another.
Naturally, we served as each other’s maids of honor, and our connection deepened as our lives became more intertwined. Over time, Benjamin and I also grew closer, creating a quartet of friendship and love with our husbands.
Now, we are couples who enjoy doing everything together — from birthday dinners to vacations. To celebrate Keith's birthday, we decided to rent a cozy chalet as a change of scenery.
“Find a place, Sadie,” Lori suggested. “You handle the accommodations, and Ben and I will take care of the food.”
We were both without children and thrilled to escape — even if it was just a short distance.
When Keith's birthday arrived, we reached the chalet early, ready to celebrate. I ordered a birthday cake, which Lori picked up, along with enough food to last two weeks, even though we were only there for the weekend.
Everything was going smoothly until the evening took an unexpected twist. We were all drinking — no one would be driving. We felt safe. However, Benjamin, having enjoyed a bit too much, sought comfort in the cool night air on the balcony with me.
Inside, Lori and Keith were singing along to music videos on YouTube.
“You know, Sadie,” Benjamin began, his speech slightly slurred, “there's something I've been keeping from Lori.”
Curious, I prompted him for more details.
“Ben, what are you up to?”
“It’s a surprise! But you must keep it a secret if I tell you. Hiding bottles from Lori has been quite challenging…”
“What bottles?” I inquired.
“Oh, you know,” he replied, his voice trailing off as the effects of the alcohol took hold.
Lori and Benjamin weren’t heavy drinkers — they occasionally enjoyed drinks with Keith and me, but they didn’t partake of alcohol on their own. This was largely due to Lori’s father being an alcoholic, which made her uncomfortable with alcohol in their home.
“What trouble are you two getting into?” Lori's tone was light and playful, but her curiosity was evident.
Benjamin quickly recovered, spinning a tale about how he and Keith had gotten stuck in an elevator earlier that week.
“We just sat on the floor and waited,” he recounted to Lori.
“I know,” she replied, narrowing her eyes. “You told me that story the moment you got home.”
My best friend shot a smile before returning inside.
I spent the remainder of the night contemplating whether I should inform Lori about the hidden bottles of alcohol Ben was concealing in their home.
On one hand, they had a wonderful relationship, and Ben always went above and beyond for Lori. He thrived on making her happy.
Yet on the other hand, Lori’s father often visited their home. If he had a relapse, Lori would never forgive herself.
“What should I do?” I asked Keith once we had settled in for the night.
“Do you think Ben was being serious?” he asked. “He was pretty out of it.”
“Wouldn’t that just mean he was telling the truth?” I countered. “More honest with a little lubrication.”
Keith chuckled.
“Sadie, if you’re concerned about it, you might want to talk to Lori. If anything happens, you’ll just blame yourself for knowing.”
Keith was right. I would feel responsible if something went wrong — even if Ben hadn’t provided me with sufficient information.
I couldn’t keep it to myself.
The following morning, Lori and I took a walk, grabbing coffee along the way. As we strolled, I shared everything Ben had mentioned, or at least hinted at.
“Are you sure?” she pressed. “Are you certain he said ‘bottles’?”
“Yes, but listen, I’m just speculating. I wanted to tell you in case something occurs. I know how you feel about these matters with your father around.”
Lori studied me for a long moment.
“Ben has been acting secretive lately,” she agreed. “But it can't be what you think!”
We walked back to our rental, discussing everything and nothing — specifically avoiding any mention of the bottles and what we both assumed they were.
Lori didn’t seem as unsettled as I anticipated. Still, I felt relieved to have shared what I knew. It was her responsibility to be ready for whatever came her way.
Upon returning to the rental, we found Keith packing our belongings and Ben mopping the floor.
“We should leave soon,” Keith said.
We checked out and headed to a small café for lunch before making our way home. I didn’t expect Lori to confront Ben with Keith and me present, but I wondered what was going through her mind.
I was unprepared for the text Lori sent me the following day.
You saved my life. Call you later.
The words echoed in my head. I had no idea what she meant, but it was ominous enough to chill me.
When she called later, Lori explained how she had decided to take an early lunch at work.
“I just wanted to get home and look around a bit. For bottles, or whatever, you know? I needed to see what Ben was hiding in our house.”
So, she entered their home and was immediately hit with the smell of gas — in their rush to leave for work that morning, neither had checked if the gas was turned off.
“Can you imagine if I had just come home and turned on the stove, Sadie?” Lori excitedly continued. “Our house would have gone up in flames. Probably with us inside.”
I could hear the tremor in her voice.
“Did you find anything?” I asked curiously as Lori calmed down.
“I did,” Lori replied. “They were behind the towels in the linen cupboard.”
“What were they?”
“They are bottles,” she clarified. “But they’re not alcohol.”
I sighed with relief. I hated being caught in the middle of this situation. I disliked having betrayed Ben's trust, but at the end of the day — Lori was my priority.
“Sadie,” she said. “They are antique perfume bottles. Well, not all. There are a few perfume bottles, and there are other antique bottles. I’m not sure why Ben has them, but they’re worth quite a bit. There are tags on each of them.”
It made no sense to me. I knew Ben had an interest in antiques — sometimes he would buy them for his collection, storing them in his parents’ house. But occasionally, he would purchase them just to sell for a higher price.
When Lori confronted him that evening, Ben’s confession revealed the depth of his love for her.
“Lori, every bottle sold was a step closer to our dream. I wanted to surprise you with a trip to Paris for our anniversary. So, I bought those vintage bottles online and have been selling them for a profit,” he explained.
“And what about the perfume bottles?” Lori inquired.
Ben stated that they were for her — straight from the set of one of her favorite classic films.
“They're meant to be the first gift,” he chuckled. “Paris was the second.”
I couldn’t fathom how Ben found the time to locate, purchase, and sell these items. They were incredibly expensive. Keith would have been impressed if I had taken up such a hobby.
“Maybe it’s just his way of expressing his love,” Keith remarked when I updated him over dinner that evening. “Lori adores her classic films.”
Ultimately, I felt guilty for spoiling Ben’s surprise — although Lori didn’t actually reveal that I had informed her about our conversation. She simply mentioned she stumbled upon them while doing laundry.
“He has no clue,” she reassured me.
Yet I still felt justified in having told her — what if, in a twist of fate, Ben was hiding alcohol in their home? It could have led to a terrible chain of events.
Now, all is well, and it appears my best friends will indeed be heading to Paris in a few months. Keith and I have made a bet about whether they will invite us along for the trip — let’s see.
Do you think I was wrong to inform Lori?
