My stepson was unaware that our door camera was equipped with a microphone – what I overheard him say regarding his biological mother brought me to tears.

When Olivia observes a shift in her stepson's demeanor, her concern deepens. She requests her husband, Patrick, to speak with him, but he gains little insight from the boy. By chance, Olivia overhears a discussion between Josh and his biological mother, and soon everything comes to light, leaving Olivia stunned and heartbroken for the young boy.

Like clockwork, every Sunday at 5 p.m., my stepson Josh returned from his mother’s home. And each Sunday, he would walk through our front door, remove his shoes, and head directly to his room without uttering a word.

It felt as if someone had switched off Josh's cheerful personality with us, transforming him from our lively, talkative ten-year-old into a sullen stranger.

What made it worse? He never shared what occurred at his mom's house. I always wanted to inquire about his mood, but I hesitated to push. Although Josh had accepted me as his stepmother, I was uncertain about my significance in his life.

"Do you think he’s alright, Patrick?" I asked my husband one evening while we were preparing dinner.

Josh had just been dropped off, and he was in a notably irritable mood, refusing to engage with either of us.

"Honestly, I believe he’s perfectly fine," Patrick replied, chopping a handful of potatoes. "Linda does have a tendency to push him, though. I'm sure she lectured him about studying and school in general."

"Yeah, I understand that," I acknowledged. "But I do the same, and he’s okay with it. He might joke or say something silly, but his mood remains unchanged. So this is just nonsense. Yet, I know that bio-mom holds the advantage over step-mom. So, I’ll keep quiet."

"Olivia," Patrick sighed. "If you want to talk to him, just do it. Walk up to him and ask whatever you like. But I’ll speak with him after dinner, too."

I nodded. That was exactly what I desired. I just wanted Patrick to ensure that Josh was alright. Because things hadn’t always been like this. When Josh first moved in with Patrick and me because we were closer to the school he wanted to attend, he was like a bright spark.

He would share stories about his day, ask questions about everything, and he made an effort to get to know me, his new stepmother. We even spent hours baking together in the kitchen while bonding.

But recently, that boy seemed a distant memory. Now, we had to exert a lot of effort to draw him out of the emotional pit he fell into after visiting Linda. We’d prepare his favorite meals, play games, and even host elaborate movie nights to try to lift his spirits.

But nothing seemed effective.

I hoped that Patrick’s discussion with him after dinner would bring about a change.

"It was fine, Dad," he responded when Patrick inquired about the weekend. "Mom was her usual self, I guess."

I stood in the kitchen, straining to catch snippets of their conversation outside while Patrick lit a small fire for s'mores.

"But why do you seem so sad? Did something happen? Your mom is wonderful, but I know she can be a lot to handle," Patrick chuckled.

"It’s exhausting being there, Dad," Josh admitted. "But I understand how crucial it is for me to keep spending weekends with Mom."

"It is important," Patrick concurred. "But if it’s becoming too overwhelming, we can always adjust the arrangement to every other week. Sound good?"

I could see Josh contemplating the suggestion, but then his expression darkened.

"I'm going to bed," he declared. "Good night!"

Josh burst into the kitchen through the door, and I thought he would dash past me. However, he paused and hugged me tightly.

"Good night, Liv," he said, making his way to his bedroom.

At that moment, I wanted to stop him and urge him to share more. But I hesitated, wanting to respect his privacy. I understood the complex feelings that accompany blended families, but this? This felt different. It wasn’t merely the usual adjustment to living in two homes; something deeper was troubling my stepson, and it was tearing me apart not knowing what it was.

Then, last weekend, things took an unexpected turn.

Patrick was out gathering my extensive grocery list, and I was sitting on the couch, awaiting Josh's return from his mother's house. Around 5 p.m., I heard the familiar rumble of her old sedan arriving in our driveway.

A few months prior, our neighborhood experienced a wave of petty crime, with unruly teenagers helping themselves to whatever they desired. Since then, Patrick had installed a new security system that was as advanced as it got.

If there was excessive activity on our porch, the feed would automatically display on our television, with the door camera capturing everything going on. It was a straightforward way for us to see what was happening before we made any hasty decisions in response.

"It's going to make us feel safer, Liv," Patrick assured me when he set up the system. "There's also an app we need to download on our phones; it will function the same way as it does on the TV."

I had to admit, it was a pretty neat device.

As I sipped my tea, waiting for Josh to come in, the feed suddenly switched from my cooking show to the live view of what was occurring on the porch.

There they were, Linda and Josh, standing on the porch.

"Here are your cookies," Linda said, handing Josh a container. "I’ll see you next week. And you know what you need to do…"

I watched on the TV as Josh's expression fell.

He didn’t respond to his mother right away.

"Mom, I don’t want to," he finally said.

My stomach twisted. I moved closer to the screen, trying to catch more of the conversation.

"You have to tell them the truth, Mom!" Josh's voice cracked. "I hate lying to Dad, and they know something is off. If Dad found out you’re making me steal from his house every week, he’d be furious!"

"Stealing?" I murmured to myself, barely able to grasp what I had just heard.

"And what about Liv? She’s going to notice that her things keep disappearing. All the sanitary products and lotions… Mom, I can’t keep doing this."

I knew I wasn’t losing my mind! Recently, I had observed that my items were being 'used up' too quickly or often going 'missing.' Now, the truth was surfacing.

What else had Josh taken for his mother?

"So what, Josh?" Linda hissed. "They have more than enough money. I told you, I need some of Olivia’s jewelry next time. If I can pawn one of her fancy necklaces or rings, I’ll have enough to cover my debts."

"What on earth?" I thought to myself aloud.

"And try to get some cash, sweetheart," Linda continued. "Your father usually keeps a wad of cash in his sock drawer. He saves it for emergencies, and helping your mother out is an emergency."

I couldn’t believe that Linda was standing on my porch, manipulating her own son into stealing from his family. I could sense from her tone that she wasn’t giving Josh a choice. She wanted what she wanted.

A wave of emotions overwhelmed me, but above all, I felt an immense weight for Josh.

My sweet boy, who had been shouldering this burden alone. It was no wonder he had been so withdrawn lately. Without a second thought, I stood up and strode to the front door.

"Linda, hello," I said coldly.

"Hi, Liv," Josh replied, reaching out to hug me.

Linda shot me a terse look without uttering a word.

"I heard everything," I stated.

Josh hugged me a bit tighter, and I could feel his breathing become heavy.

"What’s going on, Linda?" I inquired. "Tell me, or I’ll call Patrick right now. Josh, would you please go to your room for a moment, sweetheart?"

At the threat of Patrick discovering the truth, Linda quickly revealed her story. She went on about being in debt and falling behind on rent. She described her struggles to make ends meet, let alone take care of herself and Josh. She was desperate and frustrated.

"I’ll provide you with the money to help you get back on your feet," I said. "But Josh will stay here until you do. And you will not ask that boy for anything else. Do you understand?"

"He’s my son, Olivia," she replied coldly.

"Yes, your son that you’re teaching to steal from his family. I’ll press charges if you don’t cease this. Take the money and get back to being able to care for Josh. Understand?"

Linda nodded slowly, realizing that the consequences would be far worse than her pride.

"Thank you," she said almost sheepishly.

"I’ll transfer the funds to you tonight," I said. "Send me a breakdown of what you need."

She nodded and walked away.

As I opened the front door, ready to grab my phone and figure out how to keep this from Patrick, Josh wrapped his arms around me.

"Thank you," he said, tears streaming down his face. "I didn’t want to steal! I’m so sorry!"

"Oh, sweet boy," I reassured him. "It’s all going to be alright. I’m going to help Linda, and we’ll find a solution that works for everyone. I promise."

I Noticed That Money Was Disappearing from Our Family Stash — I Was Shocked When I Found Out Who Was Taking It
Judy and her family develop a habit of saving money in a "family stash jar," designated for emergencies or family outings. However, she soon realizes that someone in the family has sticky fingers, taking money for themselves. Judy must uncover who it is and the reason behind such dishonesty.

I’m sure it’s the same for most families. But in our family, honesty is the cornerstone of everything. I’ve always trusted my husband, Ethan, my 24-year-old son, Josh, and my 17-year-old daughter, Emma, implicitly.

So, when money began disappearing from our family stash, it felt like a gut punch. We had always maintained a communal jar of cash for emergencies or spontaneous outings, but recently, significant amounts had been vanishing without explanation.

"I must be losing my mind," I said aloud to myself when I noticed that the jar looked a bit different from when I had last added cash.

Initially, I thought it was merely a simple miscalculation. But as the missing amounts escalated from $50 here, $100 there, and eventually $300 in one go, I could no longer ignore it.

"Who has sticky fingers?" I asked the empty kitchen.

The uncertainty and suspicion gnawed at me. I hated feeling this way about my family.

"Are you sure it’s someone from the house?" my best friend, Misha, asked me during our cheesecake and wine outing.
