My Husband Used a Cake to Tell Me He Wanted a Divorce—Then the Truth Made Him Beg for Another Chance

Emma is sitting at her desk one afternoon when an unexpected delivery arrives. Inside the box is a cake carrying a disturbing message, along with the pregnancy test she had forgotten to conceal. Will she return home and tell her husband the truth, or allow him to leave their marriage?

I was sitting at my desk, partly writing an email and partly thinking about what I should prepare for dinner, when the office delivery worker appeared in my doorway. He was carrying a bright pink bakery box and smiling broadly, as though he knew the punchline to a joke I had not heard.

“Good afternoon, Emma!” he said cheerfully. “This was sent for you!”

“Thanks, Nico,” I replied, blinking as I accepted the box.

I had not ordered anything. No one in the office had a birthday, and there were no celebrations scheduled. So who had sent me a cake? Curiosity stirred in my stomach. My husband, Jake, was one of the senior bakers at an expensive bakery in town, so perhaps he had decided to surprise me with a small treat.

The office carried on with its usual noise. Phones rang, fingers tapped on keyboards, and people laughed in the break room while everyone waited for the workday to end. But in that moment, all of it seemed to disappear. I carefully loosened the ribbon, raised the lid, and went completely still.

Four words had been written across the cake in dark frosting, and they made my blood turn cold:

I want a divorce.

I stared at the message, blinking because I could not believe what I was seeing. But that was not everything.

Beside those cruel words, placed carefully on top of the cake, was a positive pregnancy test.

My heart seemed to drop into my stomach.

Jake had discovered it. He had found the pregnancy test I had tossed into the bathroom trash that morning—the same test I had meant to retrieve and take with me so Jake would not see it.

But I had been running late and forgotten. And now this? The cake was Jake’s answer? A divorce announcement written in frosting like a public slap.

I clutched the edge of my desk to keep myself steady as panic began rising inside me. This was not some tasteless joke. Jake believed I had been unfaithful.

What other reason could there be for sending that message?

I closed the bakery box while my thoughts spun wildly.

Years earlier, doctors had told Jake that he was infertile. He believed there was no possibility that the child could belong to him. He thought I had betrayed him and gone behind his back after everything we had endured together.

But the truth?

The truth was much more complicated.

I had not cheated on him. Of course I had not. Jake was the only man I had been with. The test belonged to me, but I had not told him because I wanted a doctor to confirm the result first.

Jake and I had suffered so much heartbreak while trying to conceive that I could not bear the thought of raising his hopes only for them to be destroyed again.

I remembered the conversation we had shared three years earlier.

“I think we need to stop trying for a little while,” I said as we sat on our bed.

“What do you mean, Em?” Jake asked. “You want us to simply stop?”

“We’ve spent eighteen months trying to have a child, Jake. I think we both need time to breathe.”

“You mean I need time,” he replied. “I’m the one with the problem. The doctors said it was because of me. Because of my sperm. So, fine. Let’s stop.”

It had taken a great deal of effort after that for Jake and me to become stable as a couple again. The pressure of trying to conceive had almost made normal life impossible for us.

And now my husband believed the worst thing imaginable about me.

I picked up the cake, gathered my belongings, and hurried out of the office, ignoring the worried expressions of my coworkers. I had no time to explain. The only thing I could think about was reaching home, confronting Jake, and telling him what had really happened.

The moment I stepped through the front door, I saw him. Jake was walking back and forth across the living room, his face red and his entire body rigid with anger.

He spun around as soon as I entered, his eyes wild.

“Tell me that test wasn’t yours!” he shouted.

I carefully set the cake box on the kitchen counter and faced him without moving.

“It belongs to me, honey,” I said.

His expression did not soften. If anything, he looked even more furious, as though he were close to exploding.

“If you truly want to end our marriage, I won’t force you to stay,” I continued. “But before you leave us, there is something you must hear.”

His hands tightened into fists beside him.

“What could you possibly tell me, Emma? I believed you loved me, and now you’re carrying another man’s child?”

“Jake, listen!” I cut him off. “This baby belongs to you. You are going to become a father!”

The sentence remained suspended between us.

Jake stopped pacing and frowned. For several seconds, he only stared at me, trying to understand what I had said. Then he shook his head, his voice trembling with disbelief.

“No. That can’t be true. Emma, I’m infertile. The doctors told us that. We’ve known it for years.”

“Darling, the doctors were mistaken,” I said, moving closer. “I saw Dr. Harper this morning after taking the test. I didn’t want you to find it before I spoke with her because false positive results can happen. She explained the situation to me.”

Jake searched my face with confused eyes, but this time he remained silent. I drew in a deep breath, knowing I had to explain everything even though I still was not certain he would accept it.

“Jake,” I began, “you were never completely infertile. Dr. Harper told me you have a condition known as oligospermia. It means your sperm count was low, but it never meant fatherhood was impossible. She also said the stress we experienced while repeatedly failing to conceive may have made the condition worse.”

Jake stared at me, unable to answer.

“Baby, you were never completely incapable of having children.”

His lips parted, but he could not form a response. He dropped into the armchair while trying to process everything I had told him.

I watched the fury leave his face and give way to complete disbelief. He lowered his head into his hands, and his shoulders started shaking as the truth reached him.

“Oh God, Emma,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion. “I thought you had betrayed me. I believed you found another man because I couldn’t… because I thought I could never give you what you wanted most.”

His voice faded as he broke into sobs.

The man I had loved for years, the man who had remained strong through so many painful moments, was falling apart before me.

I stood there and watched him collapse emotionally, while my own heart hurt in ways I could not explain. I knew I was supposed to feel joyful about the change coming into our lives.

After all, I was finally pregnant following years of failed attempts. This should have been happiness. But I was deeply hurt that Jake had immediately assumed the worst and had sent that horrible cake without asking me a single question.

At the same time, I understood him. I understood the insecurity he had carried for years and the suffering we had both experienced while trying to become parents.

“I’m so sorry,” Jake said eventually. “I thought… Emma, I’m so sorry.”

I did not step closer. I allowed him to remain there, crying and absorbing what had happened. He apologized repeatedly, every sentence filled with regret. He had almost destroyed our marriage because of a misunderstanding and the fears he had allowed to control him.

But now he knew what was true.

“I don’t deserve you,” he said. “I don’t deserve another chance. But I swear I will spend every day making this right. I promise I’ll be the best father and the best husband I can be.”

A painful lump formed in my throat. This was nothing like the announcement I had once imagined. I had dreamed of the day we would finally receive the news we had waited so long to hear. I imagined his excitement and joyful tears. I had never imagined this chaos.

Yet as I stood in front of my husband, who had completely fallen apart, I understood that despite everything, we had finally received the one gift we believed would never come.

A child.

A life ahead of us.

“We’ll find our way through it,” I whispered, my voice breaking. For the first time in years, hope appeared in Jake’s eyes. When he reached toward me, I did not move away. We remained there in each other’s arms, carrying the weight of the pregnancy and the future of our baby together.

I Paid a Man to Pretend to Be My Boyfriend at a Family Dinner—and It Became the Best Choice I Ever Made

Family events were always miserable for Lara, particularly after her sister Emily began mocking her lack of a romantic relationship. Determined to survive her father’s birthday meal, Lara decided to hire a man to act as her boyfriend for the evening. She had no idea that events resembling a romantic comedy were about to unfold.

I care deeply about my relatives, but family gatherings used to feel unbearable. Every time we were together, my sister Emily somehow found a new way to joke about the fact that I was single.

During the previous Thanksgiving, she went too far by setting an extra place at the table for my “imaginary boyfriend,” including a face she had drawn on a napkin. Everyone laughed while I pretended to be amused.

“It was funny, Lara!” she always said whenever I mentioned what she had done.

There was nothing funny about it.

Now my father’s birthday was approaching, and naturally, the family planned to celebrate with a dinner.

“There is no chance I can endure another evening like that with my relatives,” I told my friend Kate when we met for coffee.

“I’m warning you, Emily probably already has another joke planned,” I complained.

“Then pay someone to come with you for one night!” Kate said with a laugh while stirring sugar into her drink.

“You mean hire a man?” I asked in surprise.

“Yes. My sister once used an agency. She didn’t want to attend her former boyfriend’s wedding alone, so she contacted them. It’s completely legitimate, and the men follow whatever instructions you give them.”

“It isn’t… inappropriate?” I asked, searching for a better way to describe it.
