12-Year-Old Black Boy From Texas Defeats Leukemia After Three-Year Struggle

Nationwide — Michael “MJ” Dixon, a 12-year-old African American boy from Killeen, Texas, is now declared cancer-free following a three-year fight against leukemia. In 2023, he marked his health triumph by ringing the bell at Baylor Scott & White, a ritual that signifies the conclusion of his treatment. “I feel great. I can finally do everything I used to do before I had cancer; I feel like a free person,” MJ shared with KWTX.
Diagnosed at age 8, MJ’s path was challenging, with only a 23% chance of survival due to the difficulty of finding a bone marrow match for his ethnicity and blood type. Despite never finding a match, he overcame the odds and conquered the illness.
MJ’s battle involved numerous rounds of chemotherapy, which robbed him of his ability to walk, play with friends, and even his beloved dreadlocks. He expressed, “I was angry and sad, because it took two years to grow my dreads.”
His mother, Chaundra Dixon, took a bold step by enrolling him in a clinical trial for a medication called Blinatumomab that physicians recommended. It ultimately helped eliminate his cancer cells when other treatments proved ineffective.
“The doctor just looked at me and said, ‘I have to tell you. You are one strong mother and he’s a strong kid. He endured a lot of chemo.’ Even when his body couldn’t handle the chemo anymore,” his mother recalled.
Additionally, Chaundra credited their faith and community backing for helping them endure. Rapper Lil Boosie, himself a cancer survivor, offered words of encouragement and even assisted with donor match events and medical expenses.
“They thought MJ wouldn’t make it. So I say hold onto good faith, and keep laughter around, keep smiles around. I want those kids to know that they can beat this disease,” Boosie stated.
During his bell-ringing ceremony at Baylor Scott & White last year, MJ and his family gave back by contributing over $2,000 worth of toys to young cancer patients at the hospital.
MJ continues to inspire others, advising, “Keep fighting, never give up, eat healthy, eat fruits and vegetables. Don’t quit and just be yourself.”
