Tonight, We Experienced an Electricity Failure. I Entered My Son’s Chamber to Retrieve Some Candles From Beneath His Mattress, and Abruptly I Unearthed This. Nevertheless, something about the circumstance refused to release its grip on me.

My son continued chuckling as he transported the peculiar blue article back to his chamber, but my pulse hadn’t entirely calmed.

Perhaps it was because the terror had felt so authentic.

Perhaps it was because, for several moments, I had truly believed something impossible was lurking beneath my mattress.

Later that evening, after everyone had fallen asleep, I sat alone in the kitchen with a mug of coffee and contemplated how swiftly the mind fills vacant spaces with narratives.

The chamber had been dim.

I had been exhausted.

Already uneasy from a demanding week.

And all it required was a glimpse of an unfamiliar form for my imagination to convert a harmless piece of plastic into a creature from a nightmare.

The following morning, my son eagerly demonstrated how the controller support functioned.

It held his gaming controller vertically, with the charging cable running neatly through the middle.

To him, it was apparent.

To me, in the darkness, it had resembled something crawling out of another dimension.

“You genuinely believed it was animate?” he inquired, grinning.

“I’m not responding to that inquiry,” I replied.

He chuckled even more intensely.

For the subsequent few days, the narrative became family amusement.

My daughter informed relatives.

My wife couldn’t cease smiling whenever she glanced at me.

Even my brother telephoned after hearing the narrative.

“So,” he said between chuckles, “how’s existence with the extraterrestrial under the mattress?”

I deserved every moment of it.

But beneath the humiliation was something strangely reassuring.

The experience reminded me how frequently dread flourishes in uncertainty.

The less information we possess, the more imaginative our minds become.

A peculiar sound becomes an intruder.

A silhouette becomes a figure.

A forgotten object becomes a threat.

Most of the time, the reality is far less dramatic than the narratives we invent.

Weeks later, while tidying the residence, I happened to glance beneath another mattress.

For a fraction of a second, my stomach tightened again.

Then I chuckled at myself.

This time it was merely a shoe.

A perfectly ordinary shoe.

And for the initial time, instead of assuming the worst, I reached down without hesitation.

The “monster” dilemma had taught me something valuable.

Sometimes the most terrifying things in existence vanish the moment you bring them into the illumination.

Not because they were never frightening.

But because comprehension has a method of reducing dread to its actual dimensions.

As for the blue controller support, it still sits in my son’s chamber.

Every now and then I catch sight of it.

And every time I do, I remember the evening I nearly declared war on a harmless piece of plastic hiding under a mattress.

My son still calls it “Dad’s extraterrestrial.”

Unfortunately, I suspect that nickname is going to endure much longer than my dignity.
